Meat free meals for Meat Free Mondays are always hard to come by if you are a solid meat eater. Misteright doesn’t approve of meat free meals, he’s a firm meat and two veg. The Boy and I do try to eat meat free meals sometimes. Our mac n cheese even involves chunks of bacon. To be brutally honest, we don’t often manage to eat a meal without meat in. It’s a struggle! Misteright thinks that eating a meal without meat in it is boring. It’s hard to find good alternatives to meat products that he likes. He always complains that they just don’t feel meaty enough.
Is it just me who has this problem?
We were sent some meat free products from GoodLife foods. I had a sneaky plan to see if they could convince Misteright to eat a meal without meat. I didn’t tell him before hand but I did tell him afterwards. It’s been great fun. To start, we went for the Mushroom and Spinach Kiev for Meat Free Monday this week. I didn’t ask Misteright if he wanted one, I just cooked both of them in the oven and waited for him to come over and steal the spare one from my plate. It was a huge success! I told him after the first bite that it wasn’t chicken. He said it was lovely. I feel like that must be a win for the vegetarians of the world! It was certainly a win for #teamkitchen and now that we have a success story, we can see how many Meat Free Mondays we can get in this year. It’s already one more than last year for Misteright!
The spinach, French bean and Wensleydale sausages were a big hit too. They didn’t look great when they came out of the packaging. Green and brown speckled sausages were something that could go either way at our dinner table. Once cooked, they totally resembled real sausages and even had the tell tale split down the middle! Needless to say, this had both Misteright AND The Boy fooled and they both ate them all without asking what was in them. I knew immediately that this was a good sign and neither of them had cottoned on to the fact that they were meat free! The sausages are delicious and if they can fool Misteright (who can spot lesser branded Ketchup with a mere sniff) then they can fool anyone!
Overall, I think my secret experiment has been a raging success. I don’t feel much like anyone has been fooled, or sucked into anything. It’s been a bit of an eye opener too. I don’t think Misteright expected he would have enjoyed the food as much as he did. They Boy said it was all lovely, but you know, he will eat anything without question.
