The Boy and I took a trip into Hull a couple of weeks back to check out Chiquitos Mexican restaurant on Kingswood Retail Park. We both love Mexican food and it was great to be able to combine a boring clothes shopping trip with some delicious food. It was nice to take a load of but it was even nicer to try some new Mexican food that we’d never eaten before. Misteright was at work that afternoon so he couldn’t join us. That didn’t stop The Boy and I stuffing our faces. So much so that we ended up taking home some churros and chocolate sauce in a takeout box. Well, we actually ate them on the bus back home. They were still super delicious, even when they were slightly cold.
The menu was wide and offered a great selection of foods for meat eaters, veggies, and people who suffer from allergies or intolerance. We finally decided on what to eat after about 20 minutes of reading the menu. I’m the worst person to eat out with – it takes me ages to choose what I will eat! The Boy was overjoyed at the thought of eating his first chimichanga. If you’ve not eaten one before, it’s like a deep fried burrito. The Boy opted for the pulled pork inside his chimichanga. The portion size was absolutely massive. The chimichanga came served in a frying basket with a mountain of chips underneath. It also came with three small pots. Salsa, sour cream & guacamole which were a perfect addition to the dish. The chips tasted extra good with a bit of dipping. I wasn’t sure he was going to eat it all. He really enjoyed it and he actually cleared his plate! It took a while, but he ate it all.
I had the coconut chicken. I wasn’t expecting it to be such a large portion but it was really awesome. The flavours were spot on. The coconut and spices perfectly balanced each other out. It was slightly spicy but my mouth was not on fire! I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the dish was. The rice which accompanied it was perfectly cooked and very fluffy. The portion wasn’t particularly large (like The Boy’s chimichanga) but there was more than enough for me.
I loved that the coconut chicken was served in a small pot with a lid. It made it feel a bit more Mexican. Maybe that was because The Boy sat through the entire meal with a sombrero on his head, talking with a Spanish accent. We had gone in for lunch so the restaurant was empty apart for us. It was nice to have the place to ourselves. We were being a bit silly and rather loud. I was secretly glad that we didn’t have to think about any other diners!
The crispy tortilla puffs were amazing. They provided some crunch and made great scoops for the coconut chicken and the rice. We ordered some side dishes too. Onion rings and an extra basket of fries. The onion rings were super crunchy and the extra fries were great dipped in the left over sauce from my meal!
We couldn’t leave without sharing a portion of churros. We both love them so much that whenever we see them, we have to have some! The churros came served with a warm chocolate sauce which had a hint of chilli. Perfectly crisp ridges on the outside which were amazing for holding a lot of sauce. Once bitten though, the soft and fluffy centre was just perfect! We both decided that next time we visit we will not eat as much so we have more room for churros.
Disclaimer – We received a meal for 2 at Chiquitos Hull, Kingswood in exchange for this review.
We had a great time. You should know by now we always speak our minds.
