It’s been mostly about the simple birthday cake this month. This basic chocolate & vanilla loaf cake is a great cake to make for a special occasion. It’s really simple with just a basic vanilla sponge cake baked inside a loaf tin which is then cut in half, has a bit of buttercream in the middle, the top thrown back on and then the fun part. You get to smother the whole thing in buttercream and then stick Cadbury Fabulous fingers all over it, then sprinkle Mars balls over the top and shove a few candles in. It really is that easy! You don’t need to be some kind of icing God to do a buttercream and then use that as a glue to stick things on. This form of decoration can hide a multitude of baking sins too so it’s really good for people who are not very confident with cake decorating or don’t have a steady enough hand to have a plain buttercream decoration.
The end result is quite a plain cake but as it was the birthday of a Polish friend, it was more appropriate for the occasion. I had been instructed that nothing was to be too sweet or sickly as that night, copious amounts of vodka were going to be consumed! The two don’t mix well so a small, simple cake was my best option. Cakes don’t have to be complicated, they just have to taste good! I did try to find candles that I would be able to spell Happy Birthday out in Polish but I was out of luck, and the phrase has so many letters, I doubt it would have fitted.
